Stockholm is the place to be right now.

In the past few years, this Scandinavian city has exploded in popularity, earning itself a place on every traveler’s bucket list.

Why? Because it’s struck the perfect balance between cozy and cool.

It’s got the high-end cultural and culinary offerings of a major European capital, but it’s also got a cozy relaxed vibe.

And somewhere in between those two extremes is Hotel Villa Dagmar.

It’s an inviting boutique hotel that offers guests luxurious surroundings that are hip and innovative, while also being down-to-earth and relaxing — especially given their many spa offerings.

Villa Dagmar Stockholm: The Basics

Villa Dagmar Stockholm is a hotel that combines chic design with a cool, creative vibe, and a location that’s central enough for exploring everything Stockholm has to offer.

This hip and chic hotel is located in a prime location, just steps from the Östermalms Saluhall and near several galleries and boutiques.

Even with its accessibility, it still felt secluded enough for us and gave us some well-earned rest after a long day of sightseeing.

Style and Ambiance

We’ll admit that we were skeptical when we first heard about Villa Dagmar Stockholm.

A Nordic-Italian fusion? That’s not exactly the easiest of styles to blend, but we’re here to tell you: they got it right.

Villa Dagmar has a neo-classical Italian villa feel, but then the Scandinavian influence comes in and makes it even more sleek and modern. You could even describe it as a bit Grandmillenial—the best of both worlds!

It’s the perfect blend of old-school aesthetics with modern flair—and what’s more, it’s not stuffy or pretentious.

You can tell that the hotel is run by people who understand what travelers want: a cool atmosphere without any fuss.

Rooms

The hotel’s gorgeous ode to modern vintage style continues inside the brand-new bedrooms.

Each room is equipped with a desk, a flat-screen TV, a safety deposit box, posh bed linen, and fluffy pillows. We particularly enjoyed the plush carpeting and large bed—which made it easy for us to get some shut-eye after a long day of sightseeing.

The bathroom is spacious with a nice stylish freestanding tub as well as fluffy bathrobes and high-end organic toiletries.

The retro-cool Bluetooth Marshall speakers were also a nice touch—we felt like we were at home listening to our favorite songs on our playlist. There’s also a well-stocked mini bar, but items are at a premium—you’ll have to pay for the good stuff!

Some rooms also feature either an interior or exterior balcony.

Dining

At Villa Dagmar’s restaurant, the atmosphere was sophisticated, warm, and contemporary—and the food is just as good.

For breakfast, their restaurant offers both a continental buffet and an ala carte menu, which means there’s something for everyone. For breakfast, we found the continental buffet was basic but sufficient while the ala carte menu was generous and scrumptious.

Topped with a glass roof atrium, their courtyard is full of greenery and sunlight–making it an ideal place to enjoy a glass of wine any time of day and no matter the weather.

In addition, the hotel is surrounded by plenty of local restaurants and even connected to Östermalm Saluhall food hall, which has many reasonably-priced food options. Built in 1888, this legendary food hall was recently renovated and re-opened in 2020. It’s also been named as one of Bon Appétit magazine’s Top 10 Food Halls in the World!

Service

Having had our share of travels, we know a thing or two about hotel service.

The level of service can often make or break your trip.

At Hotel Villa Dagmar Stockholm, we were very pleasantly surprised by their excellent staff. We were a bit tired after a long flight and thankfully, the hotel let us check in early soon after we arrived.

We were welcomed warmly by Hanna at the front desk who was friendly and helpful. She gave us some great tips for our stay in Stockholm and even offered to arrange our restaurant reservations. The welcome note on our bed from the general manager Sune was truly a lovely touch, too.

Amenities

Villa Dagmar Stockholm has all the standard amenities expected from a boutique hotel such as banquet rooms, lobby areas, a fitness center, and more.

What sets them apart though is a place where you can rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul–the Dagmar Spirit & Retreat.

Here, guests will find a variety of innovative offerings–everything from massages, saunas, facial treatments, and sound healing. We didn’t personally try the treatments due to time constraints. However, we love the idea that this was available for all interested guests.

Location

The hotel is located in a great spot in Östermalm, just a few blocks from both the bus and metro station. It’s only about a kilometer from Gamla Stan.

It’s situated in an area that has a lot of locals—so it doesn’t feel like you’re holed up in just an exclusively touristy area.

There’s even a grocery store not too far away, so you can pick up snacks or essentials without having to venture out of the neighborhood.  You’ll find plenty of local restaurants (all types of cuisines) and shops just down the road too!

Pricing

The pricing at Hotel Villa Dagmar varies greatly depending on the season, the dates of your stay, and other factors. Expect peak prices in the summer and major holidays, but you can book early to get the best deals.

Tips

Here are a few tips on how to make your stay more enjoyable:

  1. Saluhall food hall — Don’t miss this local gem next door. Trust us, you won’t regret it!
  2. They regularly have DJs playing — On weekends and certain nights (usually Wednesday to Saturday), they have DJs or live music playing in the courtyard until 11 pm. If this is an issue, make sure to ask for a quiet room upon check-in.
  3. Try the Dagmar Spirit and Retreat — The common area is free for guests, while individual treatments are extra.
  4. The Stockholm subway (T-bana) is the most reliable form of transport — Walking is also a good option since its location is pretty central. The buses, while also convenient, tend to have a lesser than accurate schedule than the subway, so bear this in mind.
  5. Catch a boat ride — The hotel is near Nybrokajen, a popular meetup point for the signature boat rides around Stockholm.

Villa Dagmar: Bottomline

The verdict?

Villa Dagmar has all the charm and sophistication of a boutique hotel with all the amenities of a larger one.

The staff is warm and welcoming, but not intrusive. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, with modern conveniences. While the location is convenient, it’s quiet enough that you can still enjoy the peace of being away from city life—but close enough that you can be in Stockholm’s center in no time at all.

We’ll definitely be back!

PROS: Luxurious boutique hotel atmosphere, comfortable rooms and spacious bathrooms, Location is very central, Central courtyard is perfect for any weather, Ala carte breakfast is scrumptious

CONS: Basic room categories can have tighter spaces, Live music on the weekends can be an issue for some.
