Moulin Rouge Tips
A truly iconic institution – read on for our Moulin Rouge tips

Since opening in 1889, the Moulin Rouge has been dazzling audiences with its risqué and over-the-top shows.

These groundbreaking performances are now widely considered to be the inspiration for other showgirl acts, such as the ones now common in Las Vegas.

This iconic institution has stood the test of time.

It survived through two world wars and a tragic fire in 1915. In the 1940s, the Moulin Rouge was also known as the largest cinema in Europe for several years.

In fact, its legendary status has attracted countless international celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Edith Piaf, Liza Minelli, Ella Fitzgerald and more—all of whom have also performed on the Moulin Rouge stage.

TEN TIPS FOR THE MOULIN ROUGE

Book early

These tickets are in high demand all year, especially on the weekends, so book early so you can ensure that you get your desired slot.

Arrive on time

The instructions ask you to arrive 15 minutes before the show. This is because, for non-VIP patrons, they make you queue for about 30 minutes until show starts.

Prepare for tight seating

If you feel you may need more space or special assistance, contact management if they can make arrangements for you.

Follow the dress code

Many guests made it a fancy night out and were dressed to the nines. You are not required to be in formal dress, however try to at least stick to a “smart casual” style. Shorts, sports clothes, and flip-flops are not allowed. Backpacks also have to be checked at the coat room.

No photographs or video allowed

You can’t take photos once the show starts. However, you can take photos in the theater before and after the show. Waiters are happy to take photos for you, too.

Our Tinggly tickets included one big bottle of champagne

Try some good bubbly

Tinggly’s option comes with half a bottle of champagne for each person. The champagne they served at the time was Chaudron, an excellent-tasting decent mid-range champagne brand. If you’d like extra drinks or champagne, make sure to order preferably before the show starts, because waiters were a bit delayed in getting orders to some tables.

Take note: Adults only

Personally, we wouldn’t recommend anyone under 14 to watch this show. Officially though, management allows children 6 and above as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

The Paris metro system closes before the Moulin Rouge show ends, so plan accordingly

Prepare for your late night transportation

The show ends at about 1 am, so the Paris Metro will most likely be closed by the time you exit the theater. So make sure you know how to get home after the show. (Side note: we ourselves took the night bus and while it took at least 30 minutes longer than the metro, it was easy to navigate.)

Expect camp and over-the-top entertainment

There’s a bit of a campy quality to the show and many even describe it as 80’s or 90’s inspired. But in any case, we happily embraced the experience since it’s all about being at *the* Moulin Rouge.

When in Paris

Remember, this is a uniquely Parisian experience at the place that started it all, and this is what really makes the show worth it. 🙂
